Definition - Creative brief delivery and communication

What I want to do with this graphics project
I want to be able to show my core strengths in digital design as I have applied them to other projects in the past, e.g. A-level media projects, and then apply them to an artistic basis and see how well I can use as well as develop further these skills in my sketchbook
Depending on how I apply these skills, I will be able to cover both bases of 2D and 3D materials, techniques and processes. Out of the six sections we have available to lead our research (Advertising, packaging, branding, editorial, website, and information graphics).
Advertising
Pros
Cons
Get to put my experience with digital techniques to use in a real world scenario
Not much use of 3D Digital and non-digital designs. However, it can actually be done. Think about what I did in media, and how movie and video game companies advertise their movies and games through use of events, huge unmissable statues, stands, where advertisements are placed, etc.
Can explore areas of 2D digital design specified on the brief easier, such as video, editing, photography, use of typography, storyboarding
I will definitely need to find a way to access tools such as Photoshop, illustrator, Premiere pro, etc. at home (look at student programs, bursary, student discount on their website)
Will be able to fill a lot of the sketchbook with processes and examples, such as digital drawing, image manipulation, typographic, etc.

All industry reference is easily available online with digital advertisements, and records of how they have advertised in the 3D in the past on their website.

Packaging:
Pros
Cons
Uses 3D digital and non-digital materials A LOT more than advertising
Not very good at practical creations, dyspraxia makes doing anything like it a long, drawn out experience which can be very stressful. Reference GCSE Graphics and Technology
Can use both 2D and 3D processes well, for example graphics on the product itself need to be designed through the use of 2D techniques and processes such as image manipulation, collage, photography, etc. and then to create this product I will need to figure out how to get it printed on to packaging, what materials to use, CAD, etc.

Can apply a lot of the research in to materials I have conducted from boxes in to this project, not only that but I have a lot of boxes and packaging relating to the routes I want to go down (computer peripherals packaging or digital product packaging).

Although the two sections are separate, a lot can be done to make them merge. I think if I begin with one section, and then get my tutors opinion on merging the two to explore areas such as packaging and advertisement, and how those relate to each other through their 2D and 3D outcomes, that might be a good way to get a well-rounded use of 2D and 3D materials, techniques and processes, as both heavily rely on only one of the two.

I think this will be a good idea as you can commonly see advertisements relate to packaging of the product to make it visually recognizable. This is typically conducted through 2D means by use of patterns on boxes, and how the same design is used in advertisements to create something visually recognisable, logos, showcasing of product on the box as well as in advertisements and how they showcase product information to appeal to a particular market. 3D means would almost purely focus on manufacture of the product packaging, but would also explore methods of advertising in 3D too. With CAD tools at my disposal to create vector nets for my packaging, as well as printing them with a laser cutter, 3D printers to create the interior of the products to help protect it from damage (e.g. foam packaging, plastic covering), as well as printing techniques to apply the prints and related product information I’ve designed through 2D processes on boxes and for advertisements.

If I were not to merge these sections in to one, advertising would explore advertising digitally as well as in physical advertising for particular products, exploring websites and how they advertise their products to the particular markets they aim for, assessing them and how I can use these techniques in my own work for advertising a particular series of products. It would explore sections such as visual imagery in relation to products, how to make a product recognisable, how related product information is implemented in to advertisement, how a public area can be used to advertise products, different means of advertising in the 3D and 2D, how advertising is commonly used in media, etc. In terms of a final product I would emerge with several advertisements for a digital plane, showing use of 2D digital and non-digital techniques of how I created them, exploring the processes of creating the adverts, and how to use software such as Photoshop and illustrator to create these designs and images. On top of this, photo manipulated images of how I could implement my adverts in the 3D, such as billboards, statues, stands, etc.

Packaging would explore packaging in the real world related to a series of products I choose. In terms of 2D, it would explore the creation of nets in CAD software, and how it can be printed and manufactured, general design, company branding and how I can implement that in to the design of my packaging, exploration in to related product information, such as logos and symbolism relating to the product, such as the recycling logo, barcode and barcode design, warning symbols for particular product, and placement on the packaging, and if I can, apply them to the packaging of the product. With this, it’s possible to refer to real world examples of packaging from examples I and others own. I can analyse and assess these, talking about material, net, design, product safety and product storage and then apply what I learn to the particular product I make. The 3D would explore the assembly of packaging, how to keep a product safe and secure in packaging, storage of packaging, use of material, etc. The final outcome I would gain from this is a portfolio full of 2D digital and non-digital development, and then a 3D final package / packages for a product / series of products.

My Final route:
Although here i explained how i could merge these two sections of work, i think i'd rather refine it, and focus purely on just the one. That one being advertisement. This is not only because i think the pros out-way the cons in terms of what i want to do with this project, but it will allow me to present my skills in a way that's unique to me and a way in which i have done in the past, through the use of a digital portfolio. not only will this make it easy to access and moderate my work, but it will be easier to view the digital creations i make, such as video advertisements, photo manipulation, etc. all of which would be easier to present on a digital plain, where i think my work is usually better, more well presented and easy to follow and understand my criteria, technique and logical process. In another post i will discuss the company i chose to advertise and the specific products i want use for this, giving a brief overview of each product, the way in which they have been advertised and presented professionally, and my ideas as to how i could do this myself.
